My Top 10 Songs of March 2025

Disclaimer! - I am a playlist junkie and Spotify makes it easy for me to make hundreds of playlists with just a few taps. Ever since February 2019, I started a monthly playlist called “Current Phazr.” The original title was supposed to be Current Phases but evidently, I couldn’t type it correctly and I just went with it. Every month I would make a new one and fill it with music I have been listening to hence the word current. From new releases from favorite or new artists, old songs I forgot existed, old songs I didn’t know existed, and everything in between. My only requirement for each playlist is that there is no overlap. Any song that is on a previous playlist can’t be added to a different one. All new and fresh songs for me. Although there have been a few exceptions very rarely do I even think of doing it. I will give an example if it's not clear enough yet, “Dead Bent - 12” Version” by MF Doom is a song off an album released in 1999 which was before I was even born! I came across this song in 2024 and therefore it is on a playlist. Like everything related to music taste, it's all objective. It's a feeling thing if I choose to add a song to the playlist. If it’s not on any other Current Phazr playlist before it then it is eligible to be on a future playlist.

10 - Dirty Room Steppin by Coop and Swaizy

I have been diving into more CHH recently, and came across this track that makes me want to stomp on demons and shake the person next to me. I was listening to their joint mixtape called “We Missed You.” I found myself bobbing my head back and forth in Roots Roasting a Cafe, which has been my go-to for coffee and writing. “Dirty Room Steppin” was an immediate staple in my CHH playlist called Flow. CHH, for those that don’t know, is an acronym for Christian Hip-Hop. From 2014 to now, CHH has come a long way in the decade-plus I have been listening and following this subgenre. This demon shaker starts us off at number 10.

9 - Melatonin by Whatuprg

This song fits right into the sweet spot of sad boy CHH, which I believe that WhatUpRG does so well, among some others in CHH like Jon Keith. This sort of melancholic rap with a real yet righteous feel to it. Too many sadboy rap like Juiceworld or XXXTentacion or Trippe Red have become too extreme for my taste. While I admit I had a phase with that more emo rap, “Melatonin” and others like it hit differently. It keeps the integrity of the Christian perspective but yet is real in its struggles. We have seen an ascending tone in CHH of real sad boy is the only way I can best describe it, yet it keeps its roots steeped in Christ. Back-to-back CHH entries to start this list.

8 - Hedges and Highways by Red Tips

Make that three in a row. While a more trap-style banger “Hedges and Highways” brings all the qualities you could find in a regular trap song, yet with a biblical twist to it. A call to make disciples instead of trapping is the main get at with this song. Yet when you hear it, it doesn’t come across as corny as I have plainly stated. Which I believe is the growth we have seen with CHH. Slowly removing the corny lableing by making dope music yet still keeping its foundation intact. Alright, I promise the whole list won’t be CHH, but looking back at it and my previous lists this year, it has made a comeback for me.

7 - Last Minute by Sam McPherson

Guilty pleasure incoming. As simple as it gets in terms of cord progression and buildup throughout the song. I give some worship music a pass because it means more than just the same old strings and bridges, but some pop music I find enjoyable beyond the instrumentation. They are a feel-good song, of which I don’t put too much stock in its musical integrity. With that being said I don’t want it to seem that Sam Mcpherson didn’t put any effort in the song, on the contrary his vocal performance and heart that I felt behind his tones and words are what drew me to this song. It makes me think, which was any good song illicit in its audience. To think about things. Something or someone. I won’t bore you with the details, but the song made me think about someone; that is all I will say. A catchy pop song seems to make its way routinely on my monthly lists. I just have to have my healthy dose of catchy pop. Well, this one comes in at number 7.

6 - Vuleve Candy B by Bad Bunny

There are few things I love in this world more than crazy switch-ups in my playlists. I take all the compliments. The Bad Bunny bravado was on full display on this entire Latino trap album. I am glad I listened to the album again in 2025. Do I know what he is saying no. Could I easily search it up, yes. Its all about vibes and I believe that is a testament to the power that music has, how you can appreciate music even ones you don’t understand the language. Give me another bad Bunny trap song and it will make its way on future lists to come.

5 - I Like the Way by Mykeyy J feat. Spencer Kane

Conversly with CHH making waves I believe that C-R&B(I don’t even know if there is as an official tite as CHH but I will use it here). The voice of Christians has been sorely missed in one of my, if not my, favorite genres of Rhythm and Blues. I truly believe that 2025 can be the year for C-R&B, the quality has caught up with the message. Remember, focus on making dope art and your faith will shine through. Not every song has to be evangelistic, but yet still hold those same biblical principles and you can still reach people for Christ. A case could’ve been made to have this song higher and on any given day, it could be, but I will leave here just cracking the top 5.

4 - Speak 4 em by MoneybaggYo

I can keep this one very simple. A must-play for my gym playlists. I put all my music on full blast, but some hit harder than others. Sometimes it can be harder than just straight base and 808s, but this song hits exactly that. It puts me in a state of attack when it comes to working out. Since I work out so often and how hard I go, this Memphis trap song is a go-to for me, as is a lot of MoneybaggYo’s discography. Off the same album that gave us U Played with Lil Baby it hits just the same as that one, if not more. Ok, maybe not more, but recency bias tells me it does. How can two songs released at the same time have one over the other in recency bias? Time works in mysterious ways, I guess.

3 - Int’l Players Anthem by UGK featuring 3 Stacks

Keep your heart 3 stacks, keep your heart. That is what one of the coldest lyriscts ever to grace a mic, the other half of the Grammy-winning platinum-selling, chart-topping duo Outkast, was saying to himself as he waits to get married in the music video for this song. Andre 3000 is what drew me to this song, with the amount of respect and adoration I have for him, it instantly was added to any necessary playlists for me. One of the fastest liked songs I have ever organically come across. I wasn’t even searching for this song or any song in that manner. I came across it from a clothing ad on Instagram. I wish I could say I have known about this song for a long time and recently came across it again, but that is just not the case. Either way, I thank that clothing brand, though I will probably never buy their clothes or accessories, they gave me something so much better. An inadvertent great music recommendation. If you want to get me anything for my birthday or Christmas, you could do no better than that.

2 - Body Smile  by DVSN

Dvsn hasn’t failed to capture my heart with their melodic take me back R&B tunes. I have tried to go through their discography and it still baffles me that I don’t like more of their stuff. It is one of those situations where the stuff I like, I love. Like What’s up off their most recent project, “Working On My Karma”. A timeless R&B song that I believe will go down as one of my all-time favorites. Then they have Songs like “Miss Me” and “No Good” from their 2017 project “Muse in Her Feelings”. Outside a few others these are the songs along with Body Smile are the ones that i practically stan over. Yet when I listen to the rest of their music, I don’t feel the same way.  But maybe with more time and maturation, I will learn to appreciate the rest of their music past and future. “Body Smile”, believe it or not, was off their first project and yet is the last great song I have heard from, and which I would put up with all the songs I previously mentioned. It is similar to No Good in its rawness and authenticity that you only get from some old school R&B like early usher and Maxwell to name a few. That's what has been missing with all this new age, while the beats and the production are a million times better, the quality and integrity of the music pales in comparsion to what it once was.

1 - Isaiah Song by Maverick City Music

I don’t care how popular they get or the amount of scrutiny that comes with being famous, especially as a Christian artist(s). Their music and especially their early days, when they weren't as well known, performing at the Grammys, Tiny Desk concerts, and many more mainstream outlets. They had this closeness and intimacy that can still be felt in their more current projects. Isaiah Song was off their first project, and man, everything I love about Maverick City Music was on display, the worship and praise, with adoration and surrender. Surrendering our hearts to the Lord is what I feel when I put on this song. Worship is a little trickier and nuanced than any other form of genre or music. The why behind it is something so different and counterculture that when songs aren’t done well with that in mind and heart, you know. The authenticy of this group was nothing short of the work of God and is felt throughout their music, and while tey still strive for that, it becomes alot more nuanced and difficlut to nagigate that same passsion for authencity with the more eyes and ears on you. But if anyone can navigate it, it would be those who know their why.
