My Top 10 Songs of February 2025
Again better late than never I will try and get these out faster and more efficiently but its here and I am excited for you to read this.
Disclaimer! - I am a playlist junkie and Spotify makes it easy for me to make hundreds of playlists with just a few taps. Ever since February 2019, I started a monthly playlist called “Current Phazr.” The original title was supposed to be Current Phases but evidently, I couldn’t type it correctly and I just went with it. Every month I would make a new one and fill it with music I have been listening to hence the word current. From new releases from favorite or new artists, old songs I forgot existed, old songs I didn’t know existed, and everything in between. My only requirement for each playlist is that there is no overlap. Any song that is on a previous playlist can’t be added to a different one. All new and fresh songs for me. Although there have been a few exceptions very rarely do I even think of doing it. I will give an example if it's not clear enough yet, “Dead Bent - 12” Version” by MF Doom is a song off an album released in 1999 which was before I was even born! I came across this song in 2024 and therefore it is on a playlist. Like everything related to music taste, it's all objective. It's a feeling thing if I choose to add a song to the playlist. If it’s not on any other Current Phazr playlist before it then it is eligible to be on a future playlist.
10 - You Know The Drill - Andy Mineo
February, for me, was the readmission for Christian Hip-Hop. This renaissance took me back to 2015-2016 when CHH(Christian Hip-Hop) dominated my playlists and my overall listening portfolio. Andy Mineo was one of the mainstays during that time and is someone I look to as one of the legends of the CHH space. I heard this song “You Know the Drill” a while ago, closer to its 2021 release, but like so many songs, it flew over my head and ended up on my liked songs until February 2025. I still kept tabs on my favorites, like Andy, Lecrae, Aha Gazelle, and others, but they weren’t anywhere near the top of my listens. It's a sign of the times, I guess. But the joy from years past has made its way back into my ears and my heart. CHH has come a long way in terms of quality, and I am so proud of the overall genre's artistry. It’s a little bit nostalgic when I remember the days of 2011 with Lecrae and even before that, the early days of CHH when I didn’t know of the CHH genre. This was the first Drill song I have heard from a Christian Hip-Hop artist, and I wasn’t disappointed. Admittedly, they did ride the wave of the 2021 Drill rise, but they still did an admirable job on the track. With the feature of Wordsplayed, with whom Andy has repeatedly collabed with and shares a moniker and alter ego with, dubbed, “Magic&Bird,” with a joint album released in 2017 and is one of my favorite CHH albums of all time. Needless to say, this song was the quality banger I have come to expect when Magic & Bird come together. It comes in at number 10.
9 - Are You Real - Teddy Swims
It's really very simple: When I see Giveon, I push play, and it ends up on my playlists. He is on the short list of artists where I am heavily invested whenever they drop. Yet, when I heard the song, I was genuinely surprised that he wasn’t the best singer on the song! Teddy Swims ate on this song; his vocal range and well-timed run adlibs, if you will, were what made this song as good as it is. That is not to say that Giveon’s performance was bad. I actually think he did a solid job and did what he was supposed to do as a feature. Don’t overstep and make the song yours; complement the main artist, but don’t copy. Their contrasting styles added layers to this song and gave the song its integrity. I should probably check out Teddy’s new album from where this single is off of, but there is so much music to get to; it's a blessing and a curse. What if he has better songs? One could never know unless I press play.
8 - The Story I’ll Tell - Maverick City Music
I have begun my deep dive into Maverick City Music, whom have seemingly become the face of Christian Worship. I remember going to church with a friend, and I heard them perform Most Beautiful/So In Love. I tried to remember the lyrics so that later on I could try and find the song because pulling out Shazam on my phone during worship isn’t exactly ideal. But this was so early in Maverick City Music's journey that I couldn’t find an official song. There was no video accompanying the song when I first looked. I must have looked later on and found it, but from there, I have been following and have been blessed by their praise and worship. Fast forward to 2025, and I have found myself being drawn back to their discography and being more ingrained in my faith, and naturally, my accompanying music choices reflect that change. This song was from their earlier projects, and although I had heard the song long before, it didn’t strike a chord with me until recently. “My God did not fail’ amid life and all its troubles became my anthem. Where at times of trials nothing makes sense and where we can’t see him moving, I lean on the promises of God and am reminded when I play this song. The story of the bible isn’t about a loss, even though at times it looked bleak for the children of Israel, but those setbacks only add to God’s faithfulness and the declaration of victory he portrays in his Son. It's a song of reflection, looking back on how faithful God has been, and a reminder that God is in control. Amen to that.
7 - Empelotica - Lenny Tavarez featuring Feid
I am not usually inclined to force new music on myself, I like for it to come naturally, usually by recommendation or if I stumble upon it. At this juncture, I was on a YouTube search, listening to reggaeton song after reggaeton song, clicking on ones that looked like they would be good, mainly focusing on whether Feid was on the song. Needless to say, I found a handful of songs I liked after a couple of hours. After I sat with those songs, this was the song that came out of the bunch. I always liked Lenny Tavarez, and his voice is so smooth. Their vocal tones offer contrast, and they both make this track flow seamlessly. Although I believe Feid was better on the song, it didn’t distract from the song. I can’t exactly pinpoint why I kept coming back to this song in particular, but when it comes on, I rarely skip. It is just good vibes all around, and it comes in at number 7.
6 - want/need - Xavier Omar
Oh, how I would play this song to my significant other whenever God blesses me with their presence. But alas, all I could do is build playlists and find songs that would sound oh so much better after that fact. I can just picture myself playing this song as a joke when we are trying to find a place to eat after church. I know that sounds so specific and kind of weird that you think of something that hasn’t happened in that way. I am just showing how my mind works, the mind of the writer, at least this mind loves playing out storylines and scenes in my head. While yes, some, if not most of it is reading into things too much, which leads to overthinking. I have come to notice that with writers, since we are in our heads so much, it comes with the territory. I have come to accept that some things won’t change, and that is what makes a good writer a great writer. I am not saying that overthinking is all good, but if I am to be a great writer someday, I must tap into it and see it as a blessing at times instead of it being all bad. Anyway, to the song itself. Not much to write about, only that it would be way higher, except for one glaring issue: It's too short! It has a 1:36 listen time, and yet it sits at number 6. Imagine if it was 3 minutes. With another verse, how high would it be? But Xavier Omar wastes no time, for he had no time to waste to get into it, and it is still a pleasant experience.
5 - Revenge - Joyner Lucas
My brother would appreciate this entry. The intro on this song is perhaps the second-best intro I have heard so far this year. The buildup and the switch-up are crazy. The sinister piano is drawing us in as we impatiently wait for the beat switch. It’s kind of wild that I hadn’t found this song back in 2020 as that was about the time I was messing with Joyner Lucas, but alas, every song has its time and place. That time is 2025, and that place is 5th on the list.
4 - Can’t Tell It All(Remix) - Hulvey
This might be considered slightly cheating, or at least it felt like it when I thought of adding this song to my Current Phazr 64.0 playlist. The original song was an admission on Current Phazr 22.0 all the way back in July 2021. But I thought about it more and concluded it being its own song and it also answered a small gripe I had with the original that it was another song that was too short. The mainstays and legend of the CHH game graced this song with their own bravado and flows, Lecrae and KB. A perfect remix and is by far superior to the original, but I honestly look at the remix as a completion of the song. This remix coming in at number 4 is still only the second-highest remix on this list.
3 - Suenos Perdidos(Remix) - BROKIX Featuring Feid and Justin Quiles
Not only does this song have my favorite intro and is my favorite remix this year, but it has the potential to age gracefully and be in contention for end-of-year discussion. Sueno Perdidos Remix shares a lot of similarities with the song before it, Can’t Tell it All Remix. The remix being a better song than the original and a more completed version than the original. I don’t want this to come across as I only like the song because Fied is on the song and that he was naturally the best part of the song, although he was I still liked the song enough that the original was on a past Current Phazr playlist which funny enough is also similar to Can’t Tell it All Remix. The instrumental immediately puts me in my feels and adding Feid to start off the song is just unfair. There is a reason why, when he is featured, he usually starts off the song. This remix was no different as he brings vibes like only he can with his verse and later in the song sings the chorus as well! Of course, this song wouldn’t be on here if it wasn’t for Feid, but I didn’t think anyone did something that brought the song down. if anything, they didn’t ruin it, so Feid can make it great. It's Feid what can I say? Feid’s song, I mean BROKIX song, comes in at number 3.
2 - Cosas Pendientes - Maluma
It was a tug of war between 3 and 2. When I made this list to now as I am writing it I feel differently about it. But I am writing this in March which I believe has no merit, as this is about my top songs for just February; therefore, my sentiments and likes should only carry weight for how I felt about them in that month. The first time I heard this song I was doing my regular scowering of Youtube for new music. I landed upon the music video to this song and it added to the mystic and vibe of the song as a whole, which I would say is the whole point of the music video. Although I put it in my liked songs and packed it away, it slowly started growing on me as my love for this song kept growing to the point where I had it on repeat, and by repeat, I mean that literally. I had this song on a loop. Only special songs have that rare ability for me. It doesn’t happen every month, but when it does, it truly establishes its place among my favorites, perhaps of the whole year as well. Speaking of repeats, the only song ahead of it was one I definitely had on repeat even more and could go down as my favorite worship song of all time.
1 - Amazing Grace/ I Surrender - Stan Walker
I had came across Stan Walker on a instagram reel of his rendition of the “Ultralight beam” and I was blown away by not just him but the backup singers he implored. But it took me a while to look into him again and then I saw this song with a video accompanying it. With the same crew as before, they graced my ears with sweet angelic music. This is as close as I will get to hearing the voices of angels singing God’s praises. The anointing that they have is nothing short of divine appointment. Their perfect rendition of the timeless classic with their own twist on it led to an original song, which I thought at first was a cover by Hillsong. I found out after that it wasn’t and was an even better song than Hillsongs. Shortly after hearing it, I added it to my “enough to make a grown my cry” playlist, which is a playlist I made with every song that made me cry or cried to. It is so close to perfection that I not only feel closer to God, but it perhaps brought me closer; it made me feel loved and supported me in my posture of submission that I have done ever since this song. I truly believe God has used this song to speak to me and show me how much he loves me. It's not hyperbole to say that this song used by God has changed me. If that isn’t worth the number one spot, I don’t know what is.
